Russia is ready to sever relations with the European Union in the event of a significant tightening of the sanctions regime against Moscow. This was stated by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. According to him, the Russian authorities do not want to isolate themselves from world life but are ready for it.

In an interview with journalist Vladimir Solovyov, Lavrov said that the decision to isolate could be made if Moscow sees sanctions against itself, which pose risks to the Russian economy. This was announced shortly after the EU authorities spoke about the preparation of a new package of restrictions against Russia after the poisoning and arrest of opposition politician Alexei Navalny.

The sanctions were announced at a session of the European Parliament after a visit to Moscow and a meeting with Lavrov by the head of the European Union’s foreign policy, Josep Borrell. At the meeting, the deputies harshly criticized him for his soft attitude towards Russian politics.

The diplomat told the MPs that during the trip he made sure that Moscow does not plan to improve relations with Brussels. According to him, Russia did not live up to Europe's expectations of choosing a democratic course and does not intend to move along the path of the rule of law.

The day before, Reuters, citing sources, reported that after the decision of the Russian court to send Navalny to a colony, new EU sanctions may affect the circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The assets of people close to him may be frozen, they may be banned from traveling to the EU. This is exactly what Navalny's associates are trying to get from Western diplomats.
